Orchestra
The Vienna Classical Players see themselves, regardless of their international performances, primarily as an orchestra for all Viennese.
The Vienna Classical Players, apart from their international appearances, see themselves above all as an orchestra for all Viennese people. Their goal is to musically inspire people of all ages while creating a unifying atmosphere. This is achieved primarily through innovative concert formats, such as presentations and personal contact and interaction with the audience. In doing so, they add fresh accents to Vienna’s cultural landscape and specifically reach out to young listeners, inspiring the next generation to enjoy classical music.
Themes such as history, medicine, and science are also incorporated into their concert programs. They manage to combine classical music with interesting social issues, thus touching the audience and broadening the audience base. This form of interactivity and thematic diversity contributes to creating a deeper connection between the music and the audience and fostering a concentrated curiosity for classical works.
In addition to concerts at the Wiener Musikverein and the Wiener Konzerthaus, the acoustically wonderful Lorely Hall has become a new home for the Vienna Classical Players in Vienna. Since 2023, the orchestra has also had its own concert series entitled “Crossing Lines.” The orchestra’s musical heritage is deeply rooted in Viennese tradition, as its members primarily come from the ranks of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and other major Viennese orchestras. This unique combination of outstanding technical virtuosity and a shared understanding of Viennese sound culture characterizes the musical identity of the Vienna Classical Players. The joy of playing and team spirit under the direction of Chief Conductor Martin Kerschbaum make every concert a special experience.
Some highlights from the past underscore the ensemble’s versatility and success.
Some past highlights underscore the ensemble’s versatility and success. Shortly after its founding in 2003, international performances took the orchestra to Greece (Athens Festival) and Germany (Ivo Pogorelich Festival). In the Mozart Year of 2006, they celebrated a highly acclaimed concert at the Wiener Konzerthaus and made their Japanese debut. This was followed by numerous concert tours, including to San Marino, Malta, Italy, France, Turkey, and Hungary. In Austria, they have performed at renowned festivals such as the Bregenz Festival, the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt, and the Franz Liszt Festival in Raiding.
Diversity and sustainability are core values of the orchestra. These principles are reflected in both its programming and organizational concepts. An outstanding example is the consistent implementation of zero-waste approaches to its events, which they established as one of the first Viennese orchestras. Under the motto “The Vienna Orchestra – sustainably inspiring,” the Vienna Classical Players live their vision of leading classical music into the future with responsibility and a spirit of innovation. This commitment permeates all areas of the orchestra and makes it a pioneer in the Viennese cultural scene.
